Wisdom of the Body
Water Element – Support, Grounding, and Relaxation
In these classes we will experience and explore the qualities and energies of the Water element. When we connect to the energy of this element we experience a deep sense of inner support, we can relax into it, feeling safety in our connection to our inner resources. This brings a profound relaxation of anxieties and tensions and an awareness of supple, responsive flow both inside and outside. We feel grounded and rooted, capable and at ease.
Each Wisdom of the Body class will introduce you to an aspect of your life and body through the energy of the Meridians of Shiatsu, Acupuncture, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through a combination of guided meditation, gentle stretching and mobilisation exercises, and inquiry into your personal experience of the psychological, emotional, and spiritual qualities of each element we will access the energy and allow it to unfold its wisdom.
By understanding the way that each element feels in the body and manifests in our lives we can find new perspectives on life, release held patterns, and integrate the energy into ourselves in a way that brings greater vitality, energy, and spirit to our daily existence. We experience ourselves more deeply and engage life with greater awareness, pleasure, and meaning.
Each class is designed to be taken individually on a drop-in basis but the greatest benefit comes from regular practice and support. For that reason we will explore each element over three Wednesday evenings to allow us to deepen and integrate our connection to the qualities of the elements in an easy, relaxed, and supported way.
Element and Meridian Exercises – 20-30 minutes
A sequence of gentle yoga-like stretches and movements that will open up the Element and Meridian energies in the body allowing us to get a felt connection to them.
Guided Meditation – 20-30 minutes
From movemement we will deepen our connection in stillness with a guided meditation that will take us into the felt and sensed experience of the Element and Meridian qualities.
Reflective Inquiry Exercise – 25 minutes
Working in pairs we will examine our lived experience of the qualities to see how they manifest in our lives, bringing deeper meaning to the felt-sense of the energy and allowing it to bring forth the wisdom within us.
Sharing and Exploration – 40-60 minutes
A guided and supported group discussion in which we can share our wisdom and benefit from the wisdom of others. There will also be opportunity for feedback and further exploration of anything that has come up in the previous sections.

Marcia da Silva Pinto
has been working in the field of dance as a performer, choreographer and teacher spanning a period of over twenty years. She developed a particular interest in how movement and dance can reflect and shape our state of mind. She studied Dance and Movement Therapy at Roehampton Institute, London in addition to her earlier studies in Psychology at PUC University, Rio de Janeiro.
During her dance career Marcia often treated her own aches and pains using techniques such as ‘DO-IN’ (a massage method which works on pressure points) and also practised the anti-exercises and self-awareness principles of Therese Bertherat. These approaches helped her to develop a greater understanding of body awareness and sensitivity towards the subtle internal changes of energy flow. Her teaching methodology incorporates a range of effective exercises which develops flexibility through stretch, correct posture and energy through breathing. Her teaching integrates a sense of self through body awareness. Marcia is a fully-qualified Shiatsu practitioner from the London College of Shiatsu .
